Charge-out rate

Hourly rate calculator for tradies

A charge-out rate is the income you want, plus the costs of being on the tools, divided by the hours a client will pay for. The figures below are a blank starting point. Replace every one of them.

This is not a survey of what electricians, plumbers, or anyone else charges, and it is not a rate card. Tax and super are not calculated.

Example starting point. Change every figure. This is not a rate card, and it does not calculate tax or super.

1,224 billable hours a year. Costs are $9.81 of each of those hours.

$87.45 an hour

(Income + costs) ÷ billable hours. A day rate is this figure times the hours you call a day.

The sum

Billable hours are the weeks you work, times the hours in a week, times the share a client pays for. The rate is the income you want, plus your yearly costs, divided by those hours. Put the hourly figure, or a day rate built from it, on the quote as a unit price.

Short answers

Does this include tax or super?

No. It splits the income you type, plus the costs you type, across the hours you can bill. Income tax and super are separate. This is not tax advice and not a rate card.

Why are billable hours less than the hours I work?

Quoting, driving, picking up parts, and admin are often unpaid. The share you can bill is the part a client is actually charged for.
