Carpentry quotes blow out on the work around the timber: plaster, paint, and hardware the client thought was included. Name those, even when the answer is “not included”.
The sample is one internal door, hung and finished to a primed architrave. Painting is excluded on purpose.

Notes
Painting is not included. The opening is assumed to be square and the right size. A new jamb, a steel lintel, or floor sanding is extra. Hardware in the price is a standard passage set, not a smart lock.
Terms
This quote is valid for the period shown. Prices are in Australian dollars and, where GST is applied, unit prices exclude GST. Work starts after written acceptance. Variations to the scope are quoted separately.
Write the scope so a painter can read it
- Sizes. Door leaf, deck boards per square metre, or linear metres of skirting.
- Who supplies the timber, and the grade. Primed pine is a different price to hardwood.
- Hardware: hinges, latch, handles. Say if the client is supplying them.
- Make-good: plaster stop, or “edges left for the painter”.
- Fixings into what. Brick ties and steel are not the same half hour as a timber stud.
Variations
Rot behind an architrave, an out-of-square opening, or a client who changes the handle on the day are variations. The quote should say extra work is priced before you do it. A one-line note is enough if you actually follow it.
