How to write a tradie quote in Australia

Updated October 2026. General information, not tax or legal advice.

A usable quote is a page someone can accept in a text message. It names the job, the price, whether GST is in, how long the price lasts, and what is not included.

You do not need a job-management system for that. You need the same fields every time, then a PDF.

Put these on the page, in this order

  • Your business name, ABN, phone and email. The ABN is 11 digits. If you do not quote it, a business client may have to withhold tax at the ATO’s no-ABN rate.
  • The client’s name and the site address. The billing address can be different. Write both when they are.
  • A quote number and the date. You will want them when the invoice uses the same job.
  • Lines a stranger can read: what, how many, unit price. Hours are fine if you say they are hours.
  • GST on or off. If you are registered, show 10% and the total. If you are not, do not add a GST line.
  • How long the price holds. Thirty days is a common choice because materials move. Pick a date and print it.
  • Exclusions and assumptions. Access, after-hours, painting, rubbish, and “price assumes what I saw on site”.
  • How they accept. “Reply yes to this quote” is enough for a small job. Residential building work in some states needs a written contract above a set amount. That amount is different in each state. Check your building authority before you treat the quote as the whole contract.

Variations

One sentence saves the argument: extra work is quoted before it is done. When the client adds a point, a coat, or a metre of turf, send a new line. Do not bury it in the final invoice with no warning.

Then stop

A quote is not a specification for a whole renovation unless you are pricing a whole renovation. Short, specific, and dated beats a template full of clauses you do not follow.

When they accept, turn the same lines into the invoice. Retyping is how the price changes by accident.

Docket also has three template packs on the pricing page: residential terms, progress claims, and a maintenance visit. They are a Pro feature. With Pro, one opens a quote with example lines, notes and terms. Change the prices and the wording. A pack is not a contract and not legal advice.

Use your own name on the next one.
